Reason to Celebrate? 100 Days until FIFA World Cup Kicks off

Today offered some excitement to the South African working day, marking 100 days before the kick- off of the much anticipated 2010 FIFA World Cup. City streets around the country had various activities and festivals for the public to celebrate the build-up of one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

Even though I don’t believe in “celebrating” the countdown, I must admit the atmosphere was amazing in the Cape Town CBD, especially down at the foreshore which houses some of Cape Towns bigger businesses and corporates.

The World Cup kicks-off with the match between Bafana Bafana and Mexico at Soccer City on June 11 with still quite a bit to be done, not only in terms of infrastructure but also in terms of our national teams preparation for the biggest showcase in the history of SA soccer.

IOL provided the South African public with a list of 10 things Bafana must do in 100 days. Number 10 being: “Get some Madiba Magic.” FIFA president Sepp Blatter said, “the World Cup in South Africa would not be possible without the influence of former president Nelson Mandela.” Could Madiba possibly give a touch of his magic to our national soccer team or is it a complete lost cause?
I for one am remaining positive and crossing all fingers that Bafana will make it past the first round…

20 years of freedom for Mandela

Today marks the 20th anniversary of former South African President, Nelson Mandela release from prison.

According to Cyril Ramaphosa, a leader in Mandela’s African National Congress, “We knew that his freedom meant that our freedom had also arrived.”

President Jacob Zuma has chosen this day specifically to address the SA public with his State of the Nation speech to commemorate the release of Mandela.

Local firms optimistic about 2010

Grant Thornton’s International Business Report (IBR) survey polled 7400 medium to large companies in 36 countries including 300 in South Africa showing that SA’s optimism is well beyond global average. The 2010 optimism/ balance index for local firms rose to +60 percent, compared with +35 percent this time last year and remains well beyond global average of +24 percent.

Former Bafana stars establish clinic to unearth talent

Shaun Bartlett and five former Bafana Bafana stars, including Roger de Sa, Eric Tinkler, Fani Madida, Linda Buthelezi and Tebogo Moloi, will be running three football clinics in Gauteng in a bid to unearth new soccer talent for the national team.

Bartlett, who was part of the 1996 Bafana Bafana team that was ranked number one in Africa said, “We (South African football) have gone backwards since 1996.” He explained that the former soccer stars are worried that the South African team will become a third rate side.

The clinic will take the form of three boot camps taking place over the next six months and will be open for youth from local Gauteng clubs aged between 16 and 19 years. The program will start with 350 players this weekend at Wits University Youth Academy in Millpark followed by two more camps- one in April and one in June. 20 boys will be selected at the end of the program to train in Brazil where they will have the opportunity to play matches at one of Brazil’s World Cup stadiums.

Bartlett stated, “It is vital we start at the bottom and lay a solid foundation. Our goal is to produce players who will represent Bafana at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.”

The project will be endorsed by sports giant, Nike who will be sponsoring R 14 million for the initiative paying for players expenses, including accommodation, boots and kit.

Clint Eastwood’s new movie “Invictus” is set to be released on 11 December. Based on John Carlins, “Playing the Enemy,” it tells the story of how former President Nelson Mandela used South Africans passion for rugby to bring together an entire nation.

SA National Anthem Mutilated

The name, Ras Dumisani seems to be on the tips of every South African’s tongue. Unfortunately not in a good way- the singer who is said to have mutilated the SA National Anthem at Toulouse Stadium in France last Friday saw fans in fits of laughter and some far from happy Springbok players.

Lock and vice- captain Victor Matfield said, “It was a joke out there. The guys couldn’t sing along to it and even the crowd were starting to laugh. It was very disappointing.”

Dumisani, a native of Durban who is now based in France, denies that he mutilated the anthem, “No one told me they were upset with the singing,” he said. “In fact, someone just came up to me and told me how beautifully I had sung.”

Jesse Clegg following in his fathers foot steps

Jesse Clegg, son of South Africa’s “White Zulu,” Johnny Clegg will be performing his first live concert on 6 October.

The performance, entitled When I Wake Up, is taking place at the Grand Arena at Cape Town’s entertainment hub, GrandWest Casino. Guests can expect to hear top singles, “Today,” and “Heartbreak Street” as well as additional tracks from the album and some new material.

The album When I Wake Up which is nearing Gold Status, has contributed to Jesse receiving two SAMA (South Africa Music Awards) Nominations.

SA Top’s Rugby and Cricket Rankings

The Protea’s joined the Springboks this week to become the number one ranked team in their respected sporting disciplines.

With England’s 2- 1 victory over Australia in the Ashes series that was concluded this past weekend the Protea’s, who already hold the title of top ranked ODI team, overtook the Aussies as the worlds top ranked Test team.

Springbok captain, John Smit, said that, “It was fantastic for South Africa to hold the top ranking in both cricket and rugby.

It is a reward for hard work that has been put in over the past 2 years. Many hours of effort go into preparing for international competition and achieving such an accolade makes it all worthwhile.” Graeme (Smith) and his team can be proud of this achievement,” said Smit.

Things might look up even more after this Saturday as the Springboks face Australia in Perth in contention for the Super 14 title.
