SA’s newly elected President, Jacob Zuma is to sue controversial cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro (Zapiro) for a total of R7 million in damages for cartoons that related to the Presidents notorious rape trial.

The cartoons were said to be a defamation of the Presidents character. One such cartoon was the controversial “Lady Justice” drawing which depicts Zuma raping “Justice” the same cartoon which awarded Shapiro a Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Award.

Independent Online (IOL) reported that Shapiro believes that the president, who had sworn at his inauguration to uphold the constitution, which protects freedom of speech, should drop the lawsuits.
