Elizabeth Cast

Shirley Johnston (left), Cape Town actress has returned to the stage after many years writing and directing for TV, where she took part in a recent production at The Little Theatre titled, Elizabeth: Almost by Chance a Women.

Directed by Christopher Weare, the cast featured Johnston with Robyn Scott, Nicholas Dallas and Scott Sparrow.

The story revolved around the ageing Queen Elizabeth, desperate to hang on to her looks and fading youth. “The play was very funny and touching and while the plays were set in bygone era’s they are pertinent today, revolving around bribery and corruption, threats of violence and secret police. You didn’t have to read into any of the political significance to enjoy the show,” say’s Johnston.

Johnston play’s Martha, the queen’s lady in waiting, who tries to make the queen see that she has a country to run.

Johnston says, “The move back to the stage has been invigorating. For most actors theater is always their first love. It’s the love of the live performance that never leaves once the bug has bitten. What’s so great is that you actually use your training. Film and TV have different demands, they are very quick so I had to adapt to all these new challenges thrust at me again.”

Due to the big response by the Cape Town audience the cast is hoping to move the play to Jo’burg within this year.
